15 Resolutions I'll Be Breaking in 2015
*Note: I am all for self improvement and making changes. I believe we must spend our lives working to better ourselves and improve. However, I also have spent many years making unreasonable expectations for myself and dealing with the insecurity, frustration, and discouragement of falling short. I've learned that sometimes learning to laugh at ourselves, our failures, and our well-known tendencies, well, it helps many things... so, with the intention of this post in mind, continue on. ;)
So, I was cleaning out my computers files (out with the old, in with the new) and I found this old file where for the last several years, I've jotted down my New Year's Resolutions. I'm talking like seven (7) years worth of the most horrible, laughable, cheesy resolutions ever! I literally laughed out loud at some of them! I realized I had accomplished a few and I was slightly embarrassed when I realized many of them had been repeated every. single. year. This year, I decided to take a new approach to this New Year that lies before me. Below is a list of several of the New Year's Resolutions I've made over the past several years. This year, I am going to talk about ways I will most likely BREAK them in 2015! This post is just me having a little (sarcastic) fun. Who's with me?
1. Lose weight
You can never be too rich or too thin. But you can't be too thin if you want to eat chocolate and ice cream! Sure I'd love to lose some weight. Who wouldn't? I'd actually like to lose about 20 more pounds! I know, however, that I have a terrible love affair with all things chocolate... and, I'm in love with sour candies! Life isn't meant to be lived without these things! Hilariously, health is also important to me. So, to make a compromise, this year, I'm going to take my focus off the number on the scale and focus on making healthier choices 90% of the time. I WILL eat some desserts this year and I WILL enjoy them--no guilt!
2. Exercise 6x Weekly
How about not. Long gone are these obsessive hour-long, two-hour long workout sessions. I want to focus this year on just being active... as in getting my fanny and those of my daughters off the couch and in gear! Since I gave birth to my first-born close to three years ago, my fitness relationship has been random, irregular, and sometimes non-existent. I want to look for ways to be more (consistently) active as a person and as a family. How about a family walk? A trip to the park to play kick ball?
3. Drink only water.
Yes, most of the time. But I will be treating myself to a nice sugary, caffeinated soda or a juice frappe here and there. I swear Coke tastes better here.
4. Dress better---be more stylish.
I have children. Period. Small children. Exclamation point. I will get dressed this year. I will get brownie points if I shower every day. I will get double brownie points if I match and if I remember to put on jewelry--well, I'll just deserve to win the lottery! Hot dog!
5. Read Two (2) Books a Month
I used to read multiple books a week... but, being an employee, wife, homemaker, and mother has a funny way of sucking the energy right out of you! After cooking, cleaning, changing messy diapers, and answering a million questions, most nights I long to crawl into bed and watch mind-numbing television. So this year, I will make a vow just to read SOMETHING...ANYTHING. Children's books WILL count. If I actually end up finishing a book, well cheers!
6. Try Something New
Geez, I sure was ambitious all those years. I want to just try and do the things I have to do and get better at the things I already do. Trust me, all of my "skills" could benefit from some improvement.
7. Pamper Myself
Ha ha ha ha HA HA HA! *Insert Insane Laughter Here* Maybe next year? Heck, next decade?
8. Become a better cook
How about find time to cook at all? Or hey, maybe even eat what you cook without holding a baby in one arm or listening to another one crying about how they don't like something... Oh, oops... that's another point!! This one I might have a shot at, you see, living here in Colombia has proved to me that I was never the cook I thought I was in States. Crock-pot cooking, partial homemade, isn't "real" cooking or "real" food. When you have to make the chicken broth to make a recipe, cut up EVERY. SINGLE. VEGGIE and grate your own cheese... THEN you're cooking.
9. Keep a clean, organized home
*Face Palm* There's not a chance this side of South America that this will happen. If I clean it, then they come. If I organize it, they will destroy it. If I wash it, they will dirty it. How about I attempt to sweep the floor once a week, wipe down bathrooms, and wash our dirty dishes and clothes? Sounds like a plan to me.
10. Learn a new language
I am working on this one. So, I will work on perfecting my new language, porque es muy importante para mi hablar y escribir perfectamente en Español. Yo necesito aprender MUCHO mas y practicar con mas frequencia. Quizas un día yo necesito escribir un "blog post" en Español?
See, told ya it needs work! :)
11. Travel
I think I'm good on that one for a while. I will be returning to the States this year after over a year and a half. America the beautiful... I can't wait!
12. Write a Blog
Working on this one--maybe I should change this to write a blog that people actually want to read... maybe even share. Haha.
13. Be a better person
Well, this one isn't vague or general at all.
14. Better my education
Considering I'm still working on paying off my Masters, this one will have to wait for another year. Dr. Kristi Castro does have a nice ring though, doesn't it? Donations for Kristi's specialist and doctorate program(s) will be accepted! :)
15. Spend more alone time with God
This is probably one of the only resolutions to be taken seriously. When we make Jesus Christ the center of it all--the reason for it all--all the other things ALWAYS fall into place. So whether my quiet time consists of quiet, harried prayers whispered while rocking sweet babies or an hour long journaling sessions analyzing scriptures, I believe it counts. God knows where we are and I think He looks more at our effort and heart.
So, there you have it. What resolutions do you plan on breaking in 2015? I'd love to know!
